Level of Service Essay - 550 Words

Level of Service (Essay Sample) Content: Level of ServiceNameInstitutionDate 1 - IntroductionLevel of service (LOS) refers to the methodical approach of determining the value of a highway, intersections or freeway. It designates the working conditions of a highway based on given factors. These factors include fuel consumption, stoppage in traffic, delay time, speed and maneuverability among others. The LOS for a junction is dependent on the mean control delay per vehicle (sec/veh). It varies from level A where delay is 10sec/veh or less to level F where delay is very high, more than 80 sec/veh.The difference between the definite travel time and the time of travel under perfect circumstances is what is referred to as delay time. The delay time, measured at a signalized junction, only results from the phase control and is termed control delay. This delay comprises queue move-up time stoppage time, deceleration time and acceleration time. For this study, LOS is measure by determining the counts for turning move ments using DB-400 board counter contrived by Jamar, Inc. 2 à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ BackgroundThe California State University, Sacramento, intends to study the LOS of the intersection at State University Drive South and State University Drive East. This is a busy signalized junction, mainly during the peak hours because is used by the mainstream of the schoolsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ inflow and outflow. The aim of the study is to estimate the LOS of this intersection and suggest improvement to the LOS as well as minimizing the average control delay. These perfectionscomprise altering the intersection geometry, track groups as well as phase alignment and sequencing.1.3 à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ObjectiveThe foremost aim of this learning is to obtain the Peak Hour Volume (V), Peak Hour Factor (PHF), and to come up with the LOS for each turning movement at all approaches and the overall LOS of the intersection using the Synchro traffic analysis software. The study will assess the existing situation of the highway and utiliz e the results to determine the efficiency of the current geometric and signal alignment. The total outcome of these results will further be used to recommend means to achieve a higher LOS.5.0 à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬&ldqu...
